The Inaugural Grand Detour Coach Trip - Llandudno

The inaugural Grand Detour coach trip was such a fabulous experience. Apart from a minor altercation with a litter bin in Portmeirion and a brief encounter with a Mercedes twat in Swansea, we arrived back to Stroud unscathed.

This was genuinely one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done. Combining the sheer joy of driving a 50-seater touring coach whilst seeing my passengers having so much fun in the back was something to behold.

We got off to a perfect start with ice cold air-con and Jannette Evans’ much talked-about Welsh cakes donated from Swansea market. The Imperial Hotel, serving an exemplary breakfast kipper, was superb in every way, as was glorious Llandudno itself. The daily excursions actually went to plan. Sun-kissed Portmeirion, such an exotic treat, and the steam railway ride up to Yr Wyddfa providing the icing on the Grand Detour cake.

My cabin crew - the inimitable Ray Jones and Beccy Shields - performed their duties with aplomb - with the glorious Nina Stibbe watching my back every step of the way. Ray’s bingo and quiz was a tour de force of chaotic Vaudeville, and the poetry and photo competitions, fascinating, to say the least.

The diverse mix of happy passengers gelled effortlessly and great friendships were forged. Believe me - this is a truly civilised alternative to Ryan Air hell. There are so many highlights, but the most memorable for me was picking up a hitch-hiker in Snowdonia, who’d just flown 50 miles on his back-packed hang-glider. We told him we were a swingers club heading to Llandudno for a bit of hanky-panky. He chose to hop off at Betws Y Coed with a Grand Detour badge pinned to his hoodie.

Last but not least, a huge shout-out to all at First Bus Swansea training School and Ebley Coaches for their very generous help and support. I think I’m going to put together another tour in the autumn, so watch this space.

And remember - the scenic route is the only route - and not all those who wander are lost.

I didn’t stop smiling from beginning to end - … with the added bonus of seeing Wales through a Mediterranean weather lens was awesome … as well as the eclipse … Port Meirion and the Snowdonia train ride were just gorgeous and the fun and good times generated by us all was something else .. such fun  I am a definite convert … hats off to Kev … it was perfect !

and what a Grand Detour it was! It was all so well planned and considered I felt I could leave my planning brain behind and enjoy the luxury provided by Team GD; Cap’n Kevin, Cap’nettes Nina and Becky and Ray ‘Blakey’ Jones.

What an inspiring and entertaining group of passengers we were. I loved meeting and spending time with you all and look forward to the next trip. Destination unknown, destination unimportant. I’ll be there.
